Hey Nancy, I read a lot, but my patterns may not be typical. I tend to read books, novels, etc. on trains or planes. When at home I just don't read books - I'll watch movies on cable or particular channels I like. I have a theory that when commuting I need the 'calming' effect of books, and at home I like the noise and visual aspects of TV. I also read plenty on the web or in magazines wherever/whenever.
I also have been reading my grandmother's diaries. Talk about the original blog! She wrote a few sentences and noted the weather every day for 40 years... I'm the only one in the family who has been reading them. I'm annotating them year by year. I have a feeling noone else will spend that kind of time on it, and there is a lot I've learned about the time period ('45-'85) and the family.
By the way, you can see some of the books I've read in Shelfari.
Hi Nancy! Welcome to the ELL. I read fiction a lot while eating: breakfast and lunch, most weekdays. I also read at night before bed, but that's usually only a few pages before I fall asleep. I read news and blogs online most days, but my attention span is much shorter when reading online. How about you??
My favorite time to read books is in the early morning. But I can get so lost in a book then that I have to set an alarm or I'll be late to work! I also like reading books on a weekend afternoon (and then drift off to sleep). ahhh, a perfect afternoon...
I discovered I liked reading online while in online grad school, but shorter articles. I prefer reading book reviews online then in print journals. I prefer reading the newspaper online too.
But there's nothing like curling up with a book, and the smell (I'm an unabashed book sniffer!). So while I'm excited about ireaders, I'm very concerned about smell!
Thanks so much for your comments, Ted and Heather and Christie---I guess I see myself reading my way through life, and if fact I only feel complete if I carry a book with me, but I read more and more online, sites like poets.org or poetryfoundation.org the news on NYtimes, articles for research for teachers in the online databases and comments from friends and collegues various list serves and email messages...and books in every room in the house to peruse, to read, to return to....
